Need better portfolio!
Ha ha — who doesn’t, right? Anyway I was looking through my (admittedly still small) portfolio of current finished sites this evening and can’t help but feeling that they are looking rather out of date already.
What really gets me about this is that most of these sites do not look the way I would have liked to design them. In most of them the customer just wanted something done, and they wanted something simple (read: CHEAP!!) that could be thrown together at a moment’s notice.
This is probably fairly common in this industry but it sucks that I feel my portfolio is misrepresenting me. However, since I’m new in business I also feel that I have to include everything I possibly can in there to beef it up. Is that a dilemma or what? I mean, I can either just include a few of the best sites and make it look like I have next to no experience, or I can make it look like I have lots of experience creating mediocre designs. Yikes. Maybe I just answered my own question….
An alternative would be to create a few mock sites in really cool designs that show off my talent. Or maybe do some pro bono work that would allow me to stretch the old creative wings while not going over the customer’s budget. We’ll see.
My advise is to work on portfolio pieces anytime you’re not working for a client. Unfortunately, an amazing portfolio site is often the indication that you don’t have enough clients. 🙂
